THE BDA TEAM Difference

OUR STAFF ARE OUR PRODUCT. OUR SMALL TEAM LIVE AND BREATHE THE BLACK DIAMOND ADVENTURES CULTURE.

At Black Diamond Adventures, we don’t want what is expected. We want exceptional.

Our staff are full-time professionals, deeply invested in our partner schools, and considered part of our family.

We know them, develop them, challenge them, and back them.

Their impact comes not just from technical skill — but from character: humility, integrity, grit, warmth, and genuine care.

When you see our staff in action, you’ll understand immediately: there is simply no comparison.

Meet Rob Mann

Black Diamond Adventures was founded by Rob Mann to solve a fundamental problem in outdoor education.

After a decade in the classroom as a Physical Education teacher, Rob saw that the most profound student growth rarely happened in comfort. It happened when young people were challenged, supported, and guided to embrace difficulty.

Rob’s philosophy was forged long before he entered the classroom. As a product of the Duke of Edinburgh program himself, and through demanding formative years working on remote Northern Territory stations alongside Indigenous stockmen, he learned the true value of grit, discipline, and respect. He understands firsthand that character is not formed by chance. It is shaped through intentional adversity.

Leaving a secure teaching career to build Black Diamond Adventures from the ground up required the exact mindset he champions today. He began with a singular conviction. Young people need mentors who walk the same path they teach. They need leaders who know them, rather than a rotating roster of strangers.

Today, Rob’s role is to ensure that vision remains uncompromised. Whether he is building strategic alignments with school leaders, chasing swells on his surfboard, or raising his own three sons, Jack, Thomas, and Max, he demands the same qualities of himself that BDA asks of its students. Step forward, embrace the challenge, and take ownership of who you are becoming.

“THE TEAM ARE A REFLECTION OF THE VALUES AND PHILOSOPHIES THAT ROB AND BLACK DIAMOND ADVENTURES HOLD DEAR. IT IS CLEAR THAT HE INVESTS SO MUCH TIME INTO CREATING A TEAM THAT IS CARING, EXPERIENCED AND BASES ITS TEACHING IN ‘LEARNING THROUGH DOING'”

– Kelly B, Teacher, Duke of Ed Co-ordinator

What makes our staff
truly exceptional

Learning every student’s name within 15 minutes is a non-negotiable, and only the starting point.

From day one, they work to create a culture of trust, respect, and psychological safety where students feel seen, heard, and valued.

Our staff are trained to read subtle cues — posture, tone, hesitation, confidence — and adjust challenge levels for each student.

They know when to gently push, when to ease pressure, and when to quietly step in.

This is personalised Outdoor Education in action.

Even during breaks, they are there: sharing meals, joining conversations, laughing, listening, connecting.

Not because they have to — but because they genuinely enjoy being part of each student’s experience.

The way our staff care for our students does not stop when they wave goodbye. It’s not uncommon for our instructors to write handwritten notes to students after a program, celebrating growth, pointing out strengths, and reinforcing the lessons learned.

Every letter is recorded for school transparency — and treasured by families.

Many staff spend hours of their own time creating post-program videos for students and families. These become powerful keepsakes that capture not only the adventure, but the transformation.

Because our instructors work full time and run programs year-round, they are across every moving part of a trip — logistics, safety, wellbeing, group dynamics.

When weather shifts, a student needs support, or a group’s capacity changes, they know exactly how to refine the plan without compromising outcomes.

Our staff consistently choose the harder path first.

They train, reflect, learn, and strive to become bigger and better versions of themselves.

Their example is one of the most powerful teaching tools on any program.

We pair staff intentionally, so strengths complement each other.

They love working together, hold one another to high standards, and live and breathe the culture of Black Diamond.
